Pysanki Egg Decorating Workshop

  • St. Peter's Lutheran Church 121 Walnut Hill Road Uniontown USA (map)

Pysanky (“peh-sahn-kee”) have been made in Slavic cultures for centuries, even before the acceptance of Christianity in Kyivan-Rus’. The word “pysanka” comes from the word “pysata,” which means “to write,” since the designs are not painted on the eggs, but rather written or “inscribed” with wax. They are usually made during the Lenten season, so that they can be placed in families’ Pascha baskets, which are filled with the foods that are abstained from during Lent. These baskets are taken to church on Easter morning and blessed by the priest.

Join instructor Joseph Borytsky, master of various techniques of Polish art, as he guides participants through this delicate process.

A sense of curiosity, steady hands and patience necessary ;).
